MEET vs. G-D - Wednesday, September 25

Great job by everyone today! Very happy to see nearly everybody lower their time, even if only by a second! And even though not everyone lowered their times, the highest increase in time was 15 seconds - something that can easily be written off as a bad day!

You have one more chance to run our home course and improve your time.(Oct. 9). We have 2 weeks to build for that date.

I've included the difference in time from last week to this week in parentheses: a negative number means that you were faster, a positive number means you were slower.

MEET vs. OAK - Wednesday, September 18

1) Great job by everybody today! Parents, thanks for being patient while we raced a massive (and tardy) school!

2) Below are your names and times. As I told the runners today - beyond the Top 12, I don't care about what place you finish. I will not include places for our dual meet results.

3) I have added an Average Mile column - this allows for an easy conversion between courses. Our course is 1.9 miles, but another course may be shorter. As a general rule, a longer course produces a higher average number, but it is a helpful mechanism to see how well you did compared to previous results.

4) If you ran for me last year (or the year before), all your results are still posted on this site! Scroll down for last years, and check the next page for two years ago!

5) If anyone is curious how meets are scored, I will post the process below the results - that way, if you aren't interested you don't have to sit through a wall of text.

Cross country meets are scored using the top 7 runners from each team. The top 5 runners get points for their team, while #6 and #7 (if they finish ahead of the opposing teams 5th runner) are used to displace the opposing team.

Each runner is awarded a point value for the place they finish: 1st place gets 1, 2nd place gets 2, and so on. Once a team has it's top 7 runners in, all remaining places go to the opposing team.

The scores of the top 5 runners from each team are added up, and the team with the lowest total wins.

For today's girls race, the top 12 went like this:

1) Hale
2) Hale
3) Oak
4) Hale
5) Oak
6) Hale
7) Oak
8) Hale
9) Hale
10) Oak
11) Hale
12) Hale

So Hale gets 1+2+4+6+8 = 21 points. And because we had our 6th runner finish 9th (ahead of Oak's 4th), and our 7th runner finished 11th (ahead of Oak's 5th), they were able to knock Oak's point total higher, making it harder for them to win.

Oak finishes with 3+5+7+10+12 = 37 points. Because our 7th runner finished in 11th, Oak automatically gets the points for 12th place.

For the boys race:

1) Oak
2) Oak
3) Hale
4) Oak
5) Oak
6) Hale
7) Oak
8) Hale
9) Oak
10) Hale
11) Hale
12) Hale

Hale gets 3+6+8+10+11 = 38 points. Oak's 6th place runner displaced our 4th and 5th runners.

Oak gets 1+2+4+5+7 = 19 points. Their 6th runner displaces our 4th and 5th, but their 7th runner does not.

FYI: the perfect score in a cross country meet is 15-50. This is attained by one team finishing in the top 7 places. Hopefully we can see a few of those this season!

PRESEASON INFORMATION

Sign-ups were held today at lunch time. Each student that signed up received several sheets of paper - hopefully everything gets to the parents! If not, here are the main points:

- Practice starts on Monday, September 9

- Our meet schedule is posted in the column on the left.

- In order to participate in the first practice, your child needs:
     a) an up-to-date physical on file with the school nurse (taken within the last 12 months)
     b) a signed permission form returned to the school office
     c) a signed pre-participation concussion form returned to the school office
     d) to have completed a free online concussion education course. NFHS Learn or CDC - either will suffice (hyperlinks are on test names)

- Before your child can race in a meet, they need a paid user fee of $55. All monies should be brought to the school office, and checks should be made out to Hale Middle School.

- Practices will be held from right after school to about 3:30pm, Monday through Thursday. Occasionally, I will hold optional Friday afternoon practices at a site off campus. Attendance is not mandatory.

- Team members must plan on attending all meets. It is expected that team members attend all practices. I will excuse absences in the case of illness or religious reasons, and I will allow missing practice to attend another school-sponsored event (like a club, extra help, instrument lessons, etc.). However, an athlete CANNOT miss a practice or meet to attend another sports' practice or competition. If you have questions regarding what classifies as excused, do not hesitate to contact me.

One last thing: I love cross country because of the interesting dynamic it creates. You have the team race: where you are looking to do well for your teammates and school; but you also have the individual race: where you are looking to better your own time by going just a little bit faster.

There are no cuts - everyone makes the team, and everyone (who is healthy and in good standing) will compete. It is an effort sport: if you are at practice every day, working hard, following instructions, and making a concerted effort to get better, I guarantee that you will get better. If you are just showing up and going through the motions, I cannot offer you the same guarantee.

Don't hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, or concerns: blangelo@nrsd.net. I consider myself fairly good at responding - I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
